SOLA MUNICIPALITY

The city of Sola needed a new city hall. The rather small town is undergoing a large scale transformation due to the fact that it is strategically well placed. The city is important to the Norwegian oil industry and this is also where the airport of the area is placed.

The concept of the city hall is to create a ring of efficient office spaces placed on top of the different public functions placed on the ground floor. An existing city hall building is integrated in the design and by wrapping it in a new facade, the old building will be fully integrated in the new design. To create a protected outdoor area and to contrast the open park just south of the site the building is wrapped around an open courtyard space the creates an intimate outdoor space.

By stepping the building up to the north-west corner, the main entrance right at the city hall plaza is emphasized and a new lobby space entirely in wood forms the natural meeting point for the building. Further more do the stepped roof create smaller roof terraces that can be accessed directly from the office spaces.

A pedestrian route will run from the station through the building, ending right at the entrance at the city hall square.
