URBAN DENSIFICATION STUDY
The wedge shaped site is a result of two characteristic infrastructural trajectories in the area : A recreational boulevard, that used to mark the original shoreline of the city and train tracks, that are placed on landfill on a level four meters below. A worn down train station is currently situated on the site along with randomly placed barracks and a gas station. The central but noisy location and the proximity to the train station calls for a dense urban structure with a public and open program.
Public facilities in the area, like the library, the local board and the community house are decentralized on different locations. By uniting them there’s an obvious potential of synergy. Combined with a hub for startups and a hotel the different programs can benefit from each other. The unique position between the recreational boulevard and the train station provides the build structure with both a local and regional relation.
The facade consist of a laminated plates of cast glass and aluminum, which creates a refraction of daylight in green, gray or blue shades depending on the angle from where it’s observed. A passage carved out in the facade connects the street level with the level of the train tracks and two bridges crossing the site.
