BROMLEY BY BOW IS AN AREA WHICH WAS HEAVILY BOMBED DURING THE WORLD WARS. SINCE THEN THE AREA HAS BEEN REBUILT AFTER MODERNIST PRINCIPLES. THE SITE IS CUT OFF FROM THE NEIGHBORING AREAS BY A BIG ROAD, A RAILWAY AND THE RIVER. ONE OF THE MAIN TASKS WITH THE MASTERPLAN WAS TO ENSURE THE CONNECTIONS TO AND FROM THE SITE. THE MASTERPLAN PROPOSES AN UPGRADED STATION WHICH CONTINUES UNDER THE ROAD WILL BE AN IMPORTANT CONNECTOR AS WELL AS A INTEGRATED URBAN BRIDGE WILL BE A NATURAL WAY TO CROSS THE BIG ROAD.

 

ANOTHER IMPORTANT ISSUE WAS TO MAKE THE NEW CITY 'A CITY FOR ALL'. THEREFORE IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE A DIVERSE AND INTERESTING CITY BY SCALING DOWN THE BIG VOLUMES AND INTRODUCING DIFFERENT TYPOLOGIES. THERE IS FOR EXAMPLE A SMALL VILLAGE WITHIN THE MAIN BUILDING STRUCTURE. THE HIGHER BUILDINGS ARE GATHERED AROUND A PUBLIC AND COMMERCIAL STREET WHILE THE VILLAGE IS SITUATED IN A PARK AND HAS NO CAR TRAFFIC. PARKING CAN BE PLACED UNDER THE PARK AND BUILDINGS. THE WATERFRONT BECOMES AN ACTIVE PLACE TO MEET, STROLL AND HANG OUT.
