The Ålandsgade housing block is an infill in the existing urban fabric of Copenhagen. It contains a mix of different apartments with shops on the ground floor.

The idea for this building is to connect all the entrance areas of apartments with a green buffer space. This unheated, but still enclosed space would make it possible to be ”outside” during cold days in spring and autumn. The buffer zone combines the entrances to the building at ground level with small private spaces in front of the private housing units as well as some shared community spaces.

The buffer zone is cut out of the housing block in a way that allows the spaces to shift from floor to floor and with that it creates small intimate niches and private spaces within the larger open buffer space.  To the south the facade of the buffer is made up of movable glass panels that allows for natural ventilation on warm summer days. Photovoltaics on the glass panels produces electricity, helping to keep the energy consumption at a minimum - and at the same time it shades the buffer space in a way so it would feel like being under a large tree.

The stacked structure allows for integrated balconies facing the inner courtyard. In the courtyard the back facades of the shop spaces are covered with grassy hills which makes a great shared courtyard for all the inhabitants.
